Older adult abuse

My work on older adult abuse (also known as elder abuse or mistreatment) examines factors that place victims at risk of abuse, factors that make perpetrators more likely to engage in abuse and ways in which we can reduce risk through intervention.

Current collaborators include police departments, charities for older adults and social work intervention programmes.

This paper summarises all the published literature on homicides of older persons. It found that overwhelmingly, elderly homicide victims tend to be killed by somebody that they know, most often family members, and in their home or other residential setting. Several differences were identified between these homicides and those of younger adults suggesting that we need specialised approaches to protect older adults.
